Those who want to install a Linux operating system like Ubuntu or Linux Mint can look at the system requirements initially. Compared to Windows operating systems Ubuntu and Linux but is less hardware-hungry and resource-friendly.

Linux operating systems like Ubuntu and Linux Mint have relatively modest system requirements.

Ubuntu: System Requirements

Ubuntu has the following as a desktop version minimum system requirements:

  • 1 GHz processor (such as Intel Celeron)
  • 1.5 GB of RAM (memory)
  • 7 GB available disk space
  • CD-ROM drive or USB slot for installation

Note: The above figures refer to Ubuntu 10.15. For older versions of the system requirements are partly significantly lower.

Linux Mint: System requirements (Cinnamon & Mate)

The minimal Linux Mint system requirements do not differ in the two versions Cinnamon and Mate:

  • 512 MB RAM (memory)
  • 9 GB of available hard disk memory (20 GB are recommended)

Those looking for a free operating system with even lower system requirements can use the Linux operating system Lubuntu or Xubuntu. Ubuntu can incidentally also run on the hardware of a Samsung Galaxy S3, as the following video shows.
