Last year, Samsung surprised us in the middle class with its sizeable devices of the A series, which in turn beerbten successful especially in our mini devices. 2016 there are new versions of the A-units with reconditioned equipment and a style similar to the Galaxy S6 Series style. We have looked at the larger of the two models available in this country and have been testing the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) repeatedly surprised. In summary: In the test of the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) has shown that Samsung is now able to produce uncompromising good equipment also in the middle class. Although the software jerky occasionally and lacks a few features for power users, especially the message lamp and important for VR applications gyroscope, for the Samsung Galaxy A5 scores (2016) with its amazing battery life, good camera and high-quality processing. In one sentence: The Galaxy A5 (2016) is a solid device and has everything needs a majority of people.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) in the test: Processing good but slippery
The first impression has once again surprised us the Galaxy A5 (2016): It affects quality and love of detail. While the predecessor (Galaxy A5 2015 test) nor a unibody case had made of aluminum, the new, quite slim device trumps with a glass back - side it stays with aluminum. Noticeable and quite handschmeichlerisch are the left and right side, where the otherwise curved side frame is "straightened" by notches. This is known as heard of Galaxy Note 4 and S6, but that does not make it worse. The buttons for volume (left) and Power (right) have great pressure points are also blind to feel good. At the front, nothing new: buttons and "head" are designed as with any reasonably current Samsung smartphone. Thus we are to re-do with hardware buttons: A push button for home, left next to the capacitive multi-tasking button, to the right of the also capacitive back button. At most noteworthy are the subtle descent curvature of the glass display at the edge as well as the fact that the home button a fingerprint sensor is installed.
How to find the hardware buttons, is a matter of personal preferences. Negative to mention but is definitely a problem that the devices of the S series recently had: in the pocket often goes to the display, often one does unwillingly thereby dissolves functions. So it happened, for example, before the test that once a Hangouts group call, many times even the camera app was started. Samsung would do well to fire an additional query of the proximity and ambient light sensor when unlocking the screen to detect accidental triggering of the home button and leave the device in this case is in standby. Manufacturers such as LG and OnePlus put such a "double-check" for some time with success.
Front and back of the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) made of Gorilla Glass 4, that should also withstand the occasional crash. For all the robustness and quality of glass as a material has also its disadvantages, that we already know of Samsung's Galaxy-S6-family: So the Galaxy A5 (2016) pretty slick and prone to uneven surfaces to slipping. But also held in his hand one has to be extremely careful that you do not lose your smartphone. Especially for long phone calls or when the device with one hand operated makes its slipperiness negative effect - that the device is quite thin, yet supported the problem.
In our white version no problem, but in darker colors should be included also that fingerprints like to remain visible on the back. In this regard, the predecessor Galaxy A5 (2015) we liked it a little better with his roughened metal chassis.

Spicy but not too spicy: The display of the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) in the test
Samsung built an AMOLED panel at the Galaxy A5 (2016), which we like very much. dissolves first, because it comes with a screen diagonal of 5.2 inches "only" in Full HD, so a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels and has a pixel density of 424 ppi. Despite this resolution and the PenTile matrix, the display is so perfectly adequate in terms of sharpness. Thus, is thankfully does not waste battery life for the benefit of a virtually imperceptible sharpening the Galaxy A5 (2016) as is often the case with top models these days.
Secondly, because the display can be relatively light and - if that idea emphasizes. We handed in the test at admittedly gray Berlin late winter weather often manual adjustment of about 50% of the maximum brightness. Apart from, for technological reasons, slight color distortion at acute angles the image is stable even in a side view. The intense color image and the rich black are known properties of OLED panels, which of course come into play even when A5; this white has a subtle gray hue - but the only noticeable in direct comparison with LC-based displays.
The software in the Galaxy A5 (2016): TouchWiz halt
Still based during the trial period on Android 5.1.1 Software corresponded to almost one to one with what we know from the Galaxy S6. Meaning, TouchWiz with its usual advantages and disadvantages, most of which can be compensated by the simple install an alternative launcher like Nova. Here we refer to our test for the Samsung Galaxy S6 (edge). In a nutshell: TouchWiz take a step back now and offers many corners of even meaningful improvements over stock Android. In everyday life, the App Drawer proved annoying, which by default is disordered and temporary, but can not be in alphabetical order permanent. It also contains folders for tools Microsoft and Google Apps that can not be resolved. So you examined regularly arm and a leg, after about the YouTube app, only to eventually realize unnerved that this indeed is the "Google" folder of the app Drawers; but also can not be taken out there.

In addition, the RAM management is still very aggressive in terminating apps that are not in the foreground, even if subjectively not as severe as the Galaxy S6 directly after its launch. Compared to Nexus devices with stock Android Samsung still has some catching up when multitasking or (re) launch apps. Every now and then, the Galaxy A5 (2016) also choked when starting from standby, while the screen for a few seconds remained unnecessarily black. In addition, the operating system jerky significantly to himself, and to realize that you do not even strive stock Android as a direct comparison. My goodness Samsung, it is really time that TouchWiz is better performance!
However, new addition is the possibility to "optimize" Apps from the system. This is a standard activated mode, the apps optimized if they were not started three days manually. The exact function is not explained, but we suspect that the background activities of the respective apps are limited. we could disadvantages by not recognize, except for the non-working photo-uploading the Dropbox app in the background. For this we had to Dropbox exempt from the one-time optimization. However Notably, unlike the battery power - more on that later.
A few words about the fingerprint sensor: The works well enough not particularly disturbing in everyday life - especially if you turn off the screen lock with the smart lock feature home and at work. Nevertheless, the recognition rate and speed is not as good as some of the most anticipated models of Huawei and Apple. Unfortunately, when you press the Home button and the fingerprint is also not scanned automatically - so you have to press in principle twice on the key to unlock it.Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) at Amazon*Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) including a contract with your mobile phone*
Sharp and well: The camera of the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) in the test
Bluntly: The 13-MP camera of the Galaxy A5 (2016) is completely usable, although the resolution only in the 4: 3 aspect ratio is reached in 16: 9, the maximum image resolution of 9.6 MP. Although some additional features, especially video recordings are missing compared to high-priced devices in 4K 60 FPS, but on the overall image quality of the Galaxy A5 (2016), there is not much to complain about. Especially in good aspect ratios and / or with enabled HDR mode provides detailed shots that almost which can match the more expensive competition. In dark conditions, the quality is not so good, but the images benefit from image stabilization. It is noticeable on closer Zoom however, a relatively strong sharpening.
The 5-MP front camera created considerable self shot - if the motive permitting.
The video function has us also fell, with fast movements but image distortion due to the rolling shutter effect are of a technical visible. However, higher resolutions than Full HD and frame rates over 30 FPS are not possible. Here is a short sample video in the recording, we were able to refocus quickly touch-to-focus function - the autofocus can be activated in this situation with a tap on the appropriate button again.9132Samsung Galaxy A5: test shot camera (Full HD, 30FPS, OIS on)
The camera app is also managed solves pleasantly quickly and comes with a built-Pro mode, a night mode, live effects and panoramic shots many opportunities for ambitious smartphone photographers. On a positive note is that Samsung has the possibility of quick starts the camera app built by a fast double pressing the home button, which we have found useful in the Galaxy S6 devices.Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) at Amazon*Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) including a contract with your mobile phone*
ZOMG - The battery of the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016)
We tend test reports for nagging, for Mosern, to piece together of hair in the soup. A popular criticism is the battery performance of the device, because with an average usage scenario many devices do not even keep namely a full day through. The Galaxy A5 (2016) is not necessary such criticism. On the contrary: The Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) is the best in terms of battery life Samsung smartphone I've tested so far and, together with the Motorola Razr i and the LG G2 one of the most enduring smartphones ever in my quite varied smartphone test History.
When looking at the technical data alone one may not necessarily suggest that. A 2900 mAh battery with a 5.2-inch display and Android 5.1 - so even without the "Doze" mode of Android 6.0 Marshmallow - sounds good, but not earth shattering. Various synthetic benchmarks give the A5 "only" a place in the midfield. But in everyday life that is different - some "Magic Sauce" seems to have added to the Galaxy A5 (2016), which gives the device a startling endurance Samsung. After an ordinary day of 18 hours, I've been using the Galaxy A5 (2016) at least 40%, usually even more than 50% charge remaining. Several times I had the phone uncharged and activated during the night only to airplane mode - still me, the battery easily brought up to the evening of the following day.
Context: My usage scenario typically has a screen on-time of 2.5 to 3 hours per day on, with a manual brightness between 50% and 75%. I sync three Google accounts, let Google Now and Google+ permanently determine my location, I call an average of 20 minutes a day, take a few pictures and occasionally a video that will be synchronized in the background with Dropbox and Google Photos; the official Twitter app also automatically synchronized, a feed reader (Reader +) only with active WLAN; the Facebook app but I replaced for several months by a wrapper app (Metal). I look a few YouTube videos, listen to music, games podcasts over the speaker off. For most of the day, I'm logged into a WLAN; only about 2 hours a day in Berlin Telefónica / E-Plus network via 3G / 4G online. In general, I would call that a fairly typical scenario for an average Joe urbanites.
The question is: How Samsung do it? Or another way: Why does the Galaxy A5 (2016) per charge more than twice as long as with a Galaxy S6? On the one hand we have the limitations of the background activities suspected to another apparently very economical combination of CPU, GPU and baseband chip and finally the moderate in terms of energy consumption display. The fable battery values of the Galaxy A5 (2016) increase the tension on the performance of the Galaxy S7 in any case once again considerably.Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) at Amazon*Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) including a contract with your mobile phone*
Good hardware, software braking: The performance of the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) in the test
With the Exynos 7580 Samsung uses an in-house chipset Galaxy A5 (2016), which uses eight Cortex A53 processor cores and a Mali-T720MP2 GPU has. At least with us - in other markets, the smartphone is also decked out with the already somewhat older Snapdragon 615 - which was already installed a half years ago in the first smartphones. The Exynos seems particularly given the just described battery values, to have been the better choice.
The test showed that the SoC was sufficient and sufficiently performant to adequately represent the UI in any situation. Mikroruckler, as when scrolling through home screens and app drawer, but it definitely occurred. Which are not on the hardware, but the (TouchWiz-) software. You can watch them even when significantly more potent Samsung devices, but they are relatively easy defeated with the use of an alternative home screens.
Subjective good performance of the Galaxy A5 (2016) should also benefit from the fact that the file system is encrypted by default - so but also fiends easy time to reconstruct data from a stolen device. He who loves his data, ie encrypted afterwards, although possibly including performance suffers.

Of course, we have also examined the gaming performance of the Galaxy A5 (2016) in practice. Lego Batman was playable, though not always with good frame rates - these were always under the subjectively perceived as fluid frame rate of 30 FPS. Riptide GP2 ran with the default medium details fluently, all settings to maximum, apart from the shader complexity (a setting above "medium" can been crash tested by us every smartphone) jerked the game significantly. Under high graphics and CPU load - we used GTA: Vice City with all the settings to stop - the game was also playable, but not liquid. Who wants to consume complex 3D games, so should the details, if possible, do not switch on maximum settings or look around but to another device. The heat development remained completely under, only highly demanding moments we even may find a slight warming. Casual games such as we tested Tap Tap Dash running course without problems.
Connectivity and memory of the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) in the test
With 16GB of storage, of which about 11 GB are available at start-up, the Galaxy A5 (2016) is not exactly lavish, in the test we came quickly to memory limitations. At least you can retrofit a micro SD card to expand the memory inexpensive. Once Android 6.0 arrives marshmallow with an update on the device, you will also "turning over" the memory of the microSD to the internal memory and can therefore use more versatile.
Bluetooth connections were stable in the test, the connection to a BT-speaker could be maintained without problems even with two walls therebetween. WLAN connections came about quickly, there were recorded no sudden disconnections; here we were pleasantly surprised at the range. The telephony quality as well as data connections via LTE and HSDPA + attention not negative.
For Sensors: A gyroscope is not installed in the Galaxy A5 (2016). For the precision of AR / VR applications, such as Google Cardboard apps 360 degree videos with Street View and YouTube and some motion-controlled games that's a disadvantage. NFC is, however, integrated and works well.
The mono speaker on the bottom of the Galaxy A5 (2016) is relatively quiet and sounds, especially at high volumes, not very bulky. That would be no surprise, given the device size and positioning - with a comparable speaker variant but sounds such as the Huawei Mate S much better to say nothing of devices with front- or even stereo speakers throughout.
What is missing is a notification light. Personally, it has not been lacking, but many buyers looks certainly different. For this, Samsung has installed an FM radio but in the Galaxy A5 (2016). In a way it is grotesque, because this beloved by many smartphone Friend feature Samsung has dropped from the canon function of its flagship devices some time ago. Why the buyer of a middle class device like the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) now still be able to enjoy using their smartphones the good old ultrashort, is indeed a mystery to us, for some owners of A5 but certainly an important feature.
Test Result for Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016)
The test of the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) has given me fun and once again underlined that one hardly has to compromise with a smart phone of the middle class nowadays. Of course, the A5 is designed as a flagship of the caliber of the Galaxy S6 with weaker components - but also sensible. As an example, although lower resolution, but sufficiently sharp display is to serve here, which in turn leads to lower demands on CPU / GPU and result in massively increased battery life. Also, the Galaxy A5 (2016), but not in the S6 and S7 built FM radio is likely to have its fans.
With a street price of currently around 340 euros although the instrument is already much cheaper than the retrieved at launch RRP of 429 Euros; to keep up with the competition, the price would still continue to fall. At this price level, we currently recommend more nor become extremely decline in the price of the equipment 2015er flagship class - from the LG G4 (350 euros) on the LG G Flex 2 (250 euros) to the OnePlus 2 (300 euros).
